Staircase Hardwood Installation
Installed new solid red oak hardwood on a historic grand staircase at Johns Hopkins University, preserving the building's character while delivering a durable, beautiful finish.
The Challenge
The historic staircase required precise fitting around ornate Victorian-era balusters and newel posts. Each tread and landing needed custom templating to ensure a tight, seamless fit against the existing millwork while maintaining the building's architectural integrity.
Our Solution
We custom-milled each tread and riser to fit the staircase's unique dimensions, carefully working around the original dark-stained balusters and railings. The red oak was finished with a natural oil-modified polyurethane to complement the historic woodwork while providing commercial-grade durability for high-traffic university use.
