Dustless Sanding: What to Expect During Your Refinishing Project

January 28, 2026

One of the biggest concerns homeowners have about hardwood refinishing is the dust. Traditional sanding methods could coat your entire home in fine wood particles — settling on furniture, countertops, and inside HVAC systems. That's why we exclusively use dustless sanding technology.

What Is Dustless Sanding?

Dustless sanding uses commercial-grade vacuum systems attached directly to our sanding equipment. As the machine sands your floor, dust is immediately captured and filtered into a sealed containment unit — keeping your home clean throughout the process.

Does "Dustless" Really Mean Zero Dust?

Let's be honest: no sanding process is 100% dust-free. However, our systems capture up to 99% of airborne dust, which means the difference is dramatic. Most homeowners are surprised at how clean their home stays during the project.

What the Process Looks Like

Here's a step-by-step overview of what to expect:

Day 1: Prep & Sanding - We move furniture out of the work area (or you can do this ahead of time) - Edges, corners, and stairs are detail-sanded by hand - The main floor area is sanded using our dustless system - We vacuum and tack-cloth the entire surface

Day 2: Stain & First Coat - If you've chosen a stain color, it's applied and allowed to dry - The first coat of finish is applied (we use waterborne polyurethane) - Dry time: typically 2–3 hours between coats

Day 3: Final Coats & Walkthrough - A light screen sand between coats for maximum adhesion - Final coat of finish is applied - We do a walkthrough with you to ensure everything meets your expectations

Tips for Homeowners

  • Remove small items and valuables from the rooms being refinished
  • Plan to be out of the house during sanding and finishing (fumes are minimal with waterborne finishes, but it's more comfortable)
  • Wait 24 hours before walking on finished floors in socks
  • Wait 72 hours before moving furniture back
  • Avoid wet-mopping for at least 2 weeks

Why It Matters

Dustless sanding isn't just a convenience — it's better for your health, your home, and the final result. Dust particles can interfere with finish adhesion, leading to imperfections. A cleaner process means a smoother, more durable finish.
